Around the World in 40 Days!

Introducing our new PBL..
Around the World in 40 Days!
The Question: How can my experiences, knowledge, and research help me to be informed and inform other about animals and their environment?

The Launch:  Skyping with a zoo keeper from Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo......
http://www.omahazoo.com
This is the site that we researched on Thursday so students could formulate questions to ask the zoo keeper. Students if you think of any other questions to ask the zoo keeper write them down and bring them to school tomorrow.

Each 4th grade classroom will be transformed into a distinct environment, (polar region, rivers and streams, desert, swamp, and rainforest) students will be researching what their specific region is and then decorating the classroom to match what they have learned.Parents don't forget we would love your help on Monday and Wednesday after school!
After all regions are decorated students will be traveling to each room over the course of 20 days to research and be informed about the plants, animals, and characteristics of each environment. A field guide will be in the hands of each student so they can take notes on their findings and work on their final product.
Decorating in progress

Finished Product and touring other environments
Students learning about the desert environment in Mr. Carroll's classroom.
Mrs. Johnson's class visiting our Polar Region.
Kellan testing to see which hand was warmer, the one with blubber or the one without.
Our igloo thanks to Mrs. Blackburn!
Visiting Mrs. Gidaro's room in the River and Streams environment.

Culminating Assessment: At the end of researching students will create their own magazine, travel brochure, or children's book to display what they have learned while traveling. No matter what the students decide to create, they will understand how to use text features while writing, summarize multi paragraph texts using key details to support central ideas, draw logical conclusions from relationships and patterns discovered during the inquiry process and much more!

What region are we?
Our classroom will be transformed into the polar region! We need all the help we can get so please feel free to send in any items you may have at home that you no longer need and/or if you would like to come help decorate we would LOVE to have you!

Book Review A Taste of Blackberries By: Caroline

A Taste of Blackberries

My teacher told me to read this book and I didn’t think I would like it. I started to read it, and as I started I loved it, it was a very touching story, sad but so touching. I love how in the beginning of the story it started out happy and joyful and then there was a time of grief, and then towards the end it started to become happy again.

I admit that I cried when I was reading the really sad part because Jamie dies and he was the guy’s best friend. As I read to myself I thought that they both had love and friendship.

I think that this book will touch your heart because it touched my heart. This book was so good that you could read it over, and over, and over. I hope after you read this that you will read a taste of blackberries.

Blackout Poetry

Blackout Poetry
Blackout poetry focuses on rearranging words to create a different meaning. Also known as newspaper blackout poetry, the author uses a permanent marker to cross out or eliminate whatever words or images he sees as unnecessary or irrelevant to the effect he's seeking to create. The central idea is to devise a completely new text from previously published words and images, which the reader is free to interpret as he wishes.
We originally found the idea from Austin Kleon who is the New York Times bestselling author of three illustrated books, and is the author of one which is a collection of poetry made by redacting words from newspaper articles with a permanent marker.
Students were able to pick their own article and then create a blackout poem from it, this week students will present their poems to the class.
