Busy and successful week!

I am sure your 4th grader came home this week excited yet exhausted! We had such a busy week with Goodies with Grandparents, Open House, Buddy Reading, Interims, and the iPad roll out!

Native American Homes and Open House
Open House was a success, all students were able to show off their Native American homes and all the parents enjoyed seeing what hard work they put into these homes. These homes never would have happened without teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication. I was very impressed with the amount of effective communication the students had especially since it is the beginning of the year. In the past students just created the homes to show off at Open House, this year each student had a specific job other than building. Students had to write narratives about their home, descriptions of the home, blueprints, and the use of their home. Having students dig deeper to learn about their region really helped them know exactly what to put on their homes and the reason it was there.

Pueblo (Southwest)
Longhouse (Eastern Woodlands)

iPads FINALLY!
Students finally received their iPad on Thursday, to say they were excited would be an understatement! I will never forget when we went through the whole process of setting up and the home screen finally displayed you could hear all of them cheering.
First, we watched a video on how to take care of our iPad and we all signed a pledge to promise to follow the rules when handling the device.

Next, we set up the iPads, took a selfie to set as our lock screen, and added each other to our contacts list.

Lastly, we downloaded a few educational apps, one being Educreations. I had students explain to me through Educreations what a manipulated and responding variable was and then give me an example and email me it to me. The students did great with this, some drew their examples and some took pictures around the room. Here are a few examples:

Goodies with Grandparents
I really enjoyed meeting all of the sweet grandparents on Friday. Everyone was so sweet and really enjoyed their time. Thank you so much for coming!

September 14-18

Here are a few pictures of our rockets that we launched last week. The students really enjoyed this experiment and were able to tell me different strategies they would like to try for our relaunch day. Students, if you comment below and tell me what the manipulated variable was in our rocket launching experiment you can pick a friend and sit outside this week. Good luck!

We are almost finished with our Native American homes, you will see the final products at Open House. The students have worked really hard to complete these and include every aspect of the homes so everyone will know all about them when they come.
