Land Bridge Theory

Students were having trouble "visualizing" how the first people came to our continent so to provide a visual for each group, we created our own model of the Land Bridge Theory. The materials we used to make the continents and Land Bridge were flour, salt, and water. We molded the dough into North America and Asia then built the land bridge connecting the two. We mixed food coloring and water and poured into a pan so the Land Bridge was still exposed then we added ice cubes to represent our glaciers (just like the ICE AGE) and waited for them to melt so the water level would rise. As the ice glaciers melted, the water rose and covered the ENTIRE Land Bridge, when this happened the Native Americans could no longer cross it!

Emma waiting on the ice to melt...students also drew the before and after pictures of the Land Bridge to help them remember exactly what happened.

Before the ice

Eric's drawing of the Land Bridge before..he is a wonderful artist!
Here is a picture of the Land Bridge when we added the glaciers

Aaron was PROOF that this was a VERY messy project..but so much fun!

When returning from lunch this is what we found...no more Land Bridge!
