Buddy Reading

Every year my 4th graders buddy read with Mrs. Hyder's 1st grade class. The students love reading with the 1st graders because they test their comprehension skills and work with them on their skill cards for 100 BC. Here are a few pictures of our first meeting with the 1st graders, they even brought candy for a gift!

Place Value RACE

We are learning Place Value this week so to practice we had a class competition on who could build numbers the fastest with base-10 blocks. These students were REALLY good at this game!

Water, Water, Everywhere!!

Today we tested our predictions during the activity "Water, Water, Everywhere." We predicted how many drops of water a penny would hold..a few groups got all the way up to 40 drops!!!! When everyone tested their pennies we figured out our class average which was 31.8 drops!

Elephant Toothpaste

A few days ago in science we made elephant toothpaste with hydrogen peroxide, Dawn, yeast, and blue food coloring.  First we made predictions about what would happen when we mixed all the materials together then after mixing the materials we compared our predictions and made qualitative observations.

Writing from the HEART with heart maps

Today during our Writer's Workshop we created heart maps. A heart map is a visual representation of what a student likes or cares about. This heart-shaped picture uses drawings and words to show the things that "live" in a child's heart waiting for the chance to be revealed by a writing activity. The most important ideas go in the middle and the less important things go in the surrounding spaces. Here are a few pictures of our"hearts"

After drawing our heart maps, a few students wanted to share what was close to their hearts with the class.
