Updated Trash Count

We had a terrible start counting our snack trash... over 100 pieces on our first week! However, the 2nd week was MUCH better! We had counted 73 pieces... this is still a lot of trash and we are going to work on reducing again but we were happy to see we reduced our trash together as a class.

Edible Landfill

We have been learning about the 3R's (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) so at the end of the unit we learned exactly where all our trash goes, the landfill! (A place where trash is buried) Students constructed a cross-diagram of the landfill and the layers that it consisted of then they were able to build an edible landfill and enjoy the tasty treat! Here are a few pictures of our yummy treats!

Taxation without Representation!

Today we started the Road to the Revolutionary War, we discussed the French and Indian war and how expensive it was. The King had to make his money back so he started taxing the colonists for unnecessary items. Today the students experienced just how unfair this taxing was but instead of money we used candy.
Eric was not happy about giving his candy up because he had bluejeans on.

The tax collectors Davis and Emily giving the "money" to the King Lazurick.

King Lazurick on the throne with all of his money.

Giving away their money because they had a brother or sister..so UNFAIR!

Why is LESS best?

Each day for the past week each time the students would throw away trash we would keep it in a separate bag, I never told the students the reason until Wednesday. We counted our trash from the week (only snack trash) and we had a total of 103 pieces. After counting we brainstormed on ways we could cut our snack trash in half next week so we can reduce the amount of trash that is going into our landfills each day. All of the students had wonderful ideas and we will count the snack trash next week to let everyone know our final number! Wish us luck!

Chase mentioned to the class about going and buying one of these snack bags, he says doing this will cut in half the ziplock bags our class uses a day for chips, cookies, fruit, etc.

Here are the lucky volunteers counting the trash..YUCK..yes they had on gloves!

Environmentalist vs. Loggers

In our current PBL we are studying the different perspectives on environmentalist and loggers, students read the nonfiction book War of the Woods and afterwards they were required to create an infographic stating each sides argument. Before creating the infographics on the computers students constructed blue prints on exactly what they wanted to say in their infographic and choose the most essential information to put on the final product.
